Family-Friendly Goal Setting for 2025

The New Year is a perfect opportunity to reflect, refresh, and set meaningful goals. For families, it’s not just about personal growth but also fostering connections and creating memories together. Setting goals as a family can bring everyone closer while teaching the importance of goal setting and perseverance. Here’s how you can approach New Year goals with everyone in mind: yourself, your kids, and your whole family.

Goals for Yourself

As parents, we often pour so much into our families that we forget to nurture ourselves. This year let’s change that. Setting personal goals not only improves your well-being but also sets a great example for your children. Take some time the first part of this year to sit down and reflect on last year. What do you think went well and what do you think you can do better? I like to break down goals like this:

  1. Personal: These are things you want to do to take care of yourself, whether it’s regular exercise, more rest, or a new hobby. Even small actions, like reading a book before bed. Maybe you’d like to consider taking up a new skill, like learning a language, baking intricate pastries, or exploring photography. Doing something for yourself can be a small thing that makes a huge difference.

  2. Spiritual: This is a goal you’ll set to grow spiritually. Maybe this is committing to studying the Bible in a year, spending 30 minutes for quiet prayer or meditation.

  3. Life/Career: For this one think about a habit you’d like to create, maybe a career or financial goal you’d like to attain by the end of the year. This could even be to make an effort to reconnect with friends or nurture existing relationships. Schedule a coffee date or send a heartfelt message to someone you care about.

Goals for Your Kids

Helping children set and achieve goals fosters independence, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment. Tailor these goals to their age and interests. This year my kids made a vision board for their goals but last year we used the printable below. You can get access to this free printable by subscribing to our weekly navigation email!

  1. Encourage a Growth Mindset: Have a chat with your kids to see what they feel went well this past year and what could have gone better. Ask them to think about ways to make 2025 better and what steps they can take to meet their goals. Often kids will set huge goals and it’s important to explain to them that big goals are often met by taking tiny steps along the way. Emphasize the importance of writing down the small steps to meet their goals too.

  2. Promote Healthy Habits: Work with your kids to establish routines for better sleep, practicing skills, reading and helping with household tasks just to name a few things.

  3. Explore New Interests: Encourage your children to try something new, like joining a sports team, learning an instrument, or diving into creative projects like painting or writing. Setting the expectation for kids that you can always learn something new will help them become lifelong learners which is an imperative skill.

Goals for Your Family

Family goals foster an environment of unity. Here are some ideas to get started:

  1. Plan Regular Family Time: Establish weekly family game nights, movie evenings, or outdoor adventures. Consistency is key to fostering quality time. Discuss things your family would like to spend time doing together.

  2. Give Back Together: Teach your kids the value of kindness by volunteering as a family. Whether it’s at a local shelter or participating in a community clean-up, these experiences are unforgettable.

  3. Focus on Communication: Commit to open and honest conversations. Perhaps you could start a weekly “family check-in” where everyone shares their highs, lows, and what they’re grateful for. We like to do a reset and reflect twice a year as a family to take inventory about how things are going. It’s helpful for you and your spouse to check in as well as discuss goals for your family too.

  4. Create Traditions: Start a family journal for everyone to contribute their highlights of the year or introduce a tradition like Sunday morning pancake breakfasts. Along these lines decide what your family’s mission statement is if you haven’t yet. This will help everyone stay focused on what your family values most.

Tips for Success

  1. Keep Goals Realistic: While it’s tempting to aim high, small, attainable goals build confidence and momentum. This is the reason I prefer goals over resolutions. Resolutions often require a complete life shift whereas goals can be taken step by step.

  2. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge each milestone along the way. Positive reinforcement encourages everyone to stay motivated. The main goal is progress not perfection. If you fail to completely meet your goals this year don’t be discouraged celebrate the progress you’ve made!

  3. Stay Flexible: Life is unpredictable, and it’s okay to tweak goals as circumstances change. Check in on your goals around May or June to decide if adjustments need to be made. It’s okay to try something and decide it’s not working for you. At least you tried right?
