3. Backyard Campout
Camping in your backyard is a fun way to stay home. Roast some hot dogs, make some s’mores and admire the constellations. This is a great screen free options!
4. Themed Days
This is a family favorite when we want to mix things up and have fun all week long!
Movie Monday: Pick a movie as a family to watch inside or have an outdoor movie night. Serve concession staples like pretzels, pizza, nachos, popcorn, candy and soda (we allow junk food nights a few times a year, but you can substitute healthier options if you’d like). You could also cook a meal that goes with the movie like Polynesian cuisine for Moana 2 which starts streaming on March 12!
Tourist Tuesday: This is a fun and funny one. Pretend to be a tourist in your area. Go to travel websites and tourist information centers in your area. Pick places you’ve never been before and bring your camera to take lots of pictures. Ask people what places they’d recommend you visit while you’re out. You just might discover some new family favorites!
Water Wednesday: For this one you can visit your local pool/aquatic center, drive to a beach if it’s close enough for a day trip, play with water toys at home or find a natural body of water to explore like a waterfall or lake!
Thrifty Thursday: Everything you do has to be free or cheap on this day. Get everyone involved in selecting things to do. You could visit thrift stores, try out food savings hacks or check out free places/events in your area.
Flora and Fauna Friday: This day is all about the great outdoors. Everything you do must be outside. You could explore local parks, have a picnic, grill out, do a neighborhood scavenger hunt or put together wildflower bouquets just to name a few ideas. Add an extra challenge for screen loving family members by allowing only one hour of phone use the whole day. If anyone breaks the rule, they have to do everyone’s chores for the week lol.
Small Business Saturday: This is a kindness family mission. Find a great small business or small businesses to support. Go to these businesses and buy something then post it to social media. Don’t forget to tag the business and leave a good review if you can. Give the owner/ owners a word/note of gratitude or encouragement. Another idea would be to buy gift cards at the business and then walk around the area the business is located and hand out the gift cards for people to patron the business. Not only does this help the businesses but it may be a huge blessing for someone.
Say It Sunday: This is similar to a yes day, but everyone is involved and there are options. Starting in the morning each member of the family says what they would like to do then everyone votes on the activity they like the best. The person whose activity is chosen is “it”. They are the leader of the activity, and they must help everyone prepare as well as look up all the details for the activity (if they are old enough to). When each activity is completed, voting starts again. Once you have been it you cannot give another idea, but you can continue to vote. When it’s down to the last person they must provide two activities for everyone to choose from.
