History, Art, and Fun: Columbus Museum Grand Reopening Celebration
Art lovers, history buffs, and curious minds rejoice! The Columbus Museum has undergone a magnificent transformation and is now open to the public once again. When we moved here The Columbus Museum was closed for renovations, so I was excited to check it out during the grand re-opening weekend. I can’t compare it to the previous museum since we never visited however after our visit this past weekend I would call this museum a cultural gem in Columbus, Georgia.
What Are the Highlights?
The Children’s Gallery: This was the highlight of the museum for my younger kids they loved the interactive, playful nature of this space. The gallery invites young museum goers to use their senses as they explore the sensory exhibits and play structure. There’s also a spot to curl up with a book. Off of this space is the children’s garden that still looks like it’s under development however there is a stacking game and a quiet space to observe nature that my kids enjoyed.
The Art Galleries: The galleries featured American art from the 18th century to the present day. There are three floors of beautiful, captivating art. During our visit this time we explored the second floor. This museum is full of regional history, and we learned a lot about the area. My older kids enjoyed perusing the artwork trying to guess the media of art used to create each painting and giving it a story. There’s so much to see you definitely need several hours or days if you have younger children to experience all the museum has to offer!
Admission: Admission to The Columbus Museum is FREE! This was a pleasant surprise when I looked this up on the museum website. They do offer memberships and take donations to support the mission of the museum. According to their website memberships give you admission to 200-1,300 museums in the US depending on your membership level. In addition to this you’ll get exclusive invitations to exhibition opening receptions and members-only events, special rates on programs, events, and youth summer camps, discounts in The Museum Shop, and so much more.
Educational Programs: The museum offers many programs for families including classes, summer camps, special events and workshops. They have offerings for babies up to teens so there’s something for everyone. Many of their programs are free of charge.
Upcoming Museum Events to Note:
Family Saturday at the Museum: This event is typically offered several times a year.
Third Thursdays: Every month on the third Thursday join the museum for a live music event. Admission is free.
