Our Homeschool Journey: A Weekly Reflection

January 13-17

Weekly Reflection: As we jump back into lessons in this new year, I am reminded of the quiet peace we found when we began this homeschool journey in 2020. There were no more busy mornings rushing off to drop the kids off at school or get them on the bus, no more afternoons preparing for work feeling sad I’d only see my littles for a few minutes before I left for work, no more evening helping my kids through assignments that weren’t clear and no more conversations about things that occurred when they were in school that made them sad or that they felt was unfair that I wasn’t there for.

I sometimes doubt this decision to homeschool. Thinking I may make a mistake that will ruin them forever academically. Then we have a quiet season like this and like when we began. Where I can take in the progress they are making, where we can relish all the aha moments, where we can work through issues together even when it’s hard, where we can have an impromptu movie day or dive into a question that pops into their head. This time is such a gift but it’s also really hard work. As I write this, I have tabs open on my computer to find resources to help one of my kids grasp measurement better. After returning home from a trip this past weekend I was up until 2:30am preparing lessons for this week. I do miss the quiet mornings after the kids were at school but this time with them is more valuable than those quiet moments I had that I will be able to revisit later in life once they are gone. So this week as I reflect I’m grateful. Grateful for this season of quiet and peace. Grateful for this time at home with my children to teach them and help them with their life pursuits. Grateful that God showed me the beauty of selflessness and sacrificing my own time.
